Lowery and Mary Walker have created a visual and literary feast.
Here is a view of America you won’t see from an interstate

RENOWNED
PHOTOGRAPHER AND PILOT RON LOWERY AND WRITER AND PILOT MARY WALKER
TAKE READERS ON A BREATHTAKING EXPEDITION AS THEY RETRACE THE
HISTORICAL JOURNEY OF LEWIS AND CLARK BY AIR ON THE 200TH ANNIVERSARY
“CHASING
LEWIS AND CLARK ACROSS AMERICA” PROVIDES A LANDMARK PERSPECTIVE
OF THIS COUNTRY THROUGH STUNNING PHOTOGRAPHS , ON SITE INTERVIEWS,
AND AN ADVENTURE STORY REMINISCENT OF THE ORIGINAL EXPLORERS
When
the Lewis and Clark expedition set out in May, 1804, the region
of North America west of the Mississippi River was but a blank
spot on Thomas Jefferson’s map. In this bicentennial celebration
of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, two adventurers, Ron Lowery,
an experienced pilot and photographer, and Mary Walker, a writer
and pilot, retraced the legendary journey via the sky. Using the
rivers to guide them, Ron and Mary crossed the magnificent prairies,
endless forests, abundant farm lands and western mountains of
America along the historic route. Capturing each portion of the
trip with his camera, Ron Lowery shot over 4,000 photographs of
their journey from an open cockpit twin-engine plane called Cloud
Chaser.
“I
built this plane for two reasons–first for photography,
second for exploring,” says Ron Lowery. “For the past
three months, I have flown over landscapes that never repeated
but evolved like the view through a kaleidoscope. It was like
Cloud Chaser was taking us to yet another breathtaking
site to show me what she had found.”
CHASING
LEWIS AND CLARK ACROSS AMERICA (Windsock Media, October, 2004,
$45) by Ron Lowery and Mary Walker showcases the magnificent photos
and personal commentary of their adventure as they followed the
historic route. From the virgin wilderness that Lewis and Clark
discovered to the expansive cities of the 21st century, the collection
of photos is like a tightly woven tapestry of America’s
heritage.
The
idea for the book began several years ago when Ron Lowery learned
of this unique plane that was perfect for photography because
it could fly low and slow. Excited about this remarkable plane,
Ron and his older son, Alan, built the plane from a kit. With
the plane’s open cockpit design, the photographer sits way
out in front of the wing, so he can freely shoot wide angles and
nothing gets in the way of his field of vision. Additionally,
the plane can cruise at 75 mph, and has a stall speed near 35
mph, perfect for shooting photos, but can quickly climb 1,800
feet per minute.
The two aerial explorers faced forest fires and windstorms in
Montana, 114 degree heat in Idaho, tornadoes in Missouri, and
the high altitudes of the Rockies. Because the plane is so open
to the elements, Ron and Mary had to use the utmost precautions
when planning and preparing for their flights. With the wind blowing
their faces and bugs in their teeth, they had an adventure that
many only fantasize about.
While the novelty of Ron’s aircraft often drew a crowd as
these modern-day adventurers retraced the Lewis and Clark trail
by air, Mary’s on-the-ground interviews capture American
history 2004. Just like Lewis and Clark, who made friends and
alliances along their path, Ron and Mary befriended so many people–including
descendants of Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse–willing to help,
guide, direct or just chat.
This visual and verbal perspective will inspire you with:
•
The history of the original Lewis and Clark expedition
•
How Lowery and Walker navigated a course along the rivers, across
the
prairies and over the Rockies
•
Who they came in contact with along their journey
•
How the Bicentennial is being observed across America.
•
How the creative mind of a photographer works
•
The experience of open cockpit flying throughout the country.
•
How they researched the route using satellite imagery and 3D mapping
•
The differences and similarities of the two expeditions.
CHASING
LEWIS AND CLARK ACROSS AMERICA offers a fresh perspective–a
view from above, if you will–on that great adventure. Through
photographs taken both on the ground and from the air that span
from the muddy Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean, the adventure
comes to life, revealing America’s soul with scenes of winding
rivers and their peaceful valleys, high plains blooming bright
with yellow canola, and a perilous staircase of snow-capped mountains.
