EXCERPTS FROM
Chasing Lewis & Clark Across America
Missouri River
Romance
The lower 800 miles of her length were smooth and tan, flowing
in gradual curves like legs. The oxbows showed evidence
that she had exercised her prerogative to change direction.
Rising gradually to the high plains of the Dakotas and east
Montana, she took on more depth and character. Near Glasgow,
Montana the river turned turquoise and very clear, as if
she was revealing her soul. (page 72)Flying
in the Missouri Breaks
Ron arrives at the ranch before we do. He circles for landing,
but the “grass strip” has no grass! It’s
just bare dirt with ridges, bumps, two slopes and a dogleg
at the end. He touches down and bumps along sounding like
a hammer being dragged across a corrugated metal roof. As
Ron settles in a cloud of dust, Clyde asks, “How did
you like my strip? I just built it yesterday and you’re
the first to try it.” (page 52)
Planet
Earth
In a theater called “Planet Earth” I am a spectator
in a balcony seat less than the width of a canoe. With nothing
below me but the air we breathe, I witness artistry created
by eons of change. Even though a large wing and two powerful
engines loom behind me, a feeling of serenity surrounds
me. The very simplicity of sitting there with barely enough
room for flight instruments and camera is enough of a force
that will bond me emotionally to the plot of the show. (page

The
Ethereal Experience of Flight
For the past three months I have flown over landscapes that
never repeated but evolved like the view through a slowly
rotating kaleidoscope. It wasn’t like traveling to
a destination. It was like Cloud Chaser was anxiously
taking me to another valley to show what she had found.
